Dwellings

The Dwellings of the People of Paradise

“Allah has promised the believing men and believing women Gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein [forever], and beautiful mansions in Gardens of everlasting bliss. But the greatest bliss is the Good Pleasure of Allah. That is the supreme success.” [Surah Al-Tawbah 9:72]

“and they will reside in the high dwellings [Paradise] in peace and security.” [Surah Saba’ 34:37]

Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), that the messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “last night I was visited by two persons who woke me up and took me with them, and we reached a city which is built from bricks of gold and silver; and we were met there by people with one half of their face as the most beautiful that you ever seen and the other half as the ugliest that you ever seen, and it was said to them: go ye and throw yourselves into that river, and they threw themselves in it and then they returned with their bodies not afflicted any more, and they became in the most beautiful of looks. [Then,] they said to me: This is the garden of Eden, and that is your house; and they said: As for the people with one half of their face beautiful and the other half ugly, it is because they had mixed good deeds and bad deeds, but Allah had forgiven them” [Bukhari 4674]

Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), that the messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “....last night I was visited by two persons who woke me up and took me with them,.. and we reached a city which is built from bricks of gold and silver, and so we approached the gate of the city and asked to be allowed in, and we were allowed in; and we were met there by people with one half of their face as the most beautiful that you ever seen and the other half as the ugliest that you ever seen, and it was said to them: go ye and throw yourselves into that river. He said: And behold, a river running across [the city], the water of which is like pure milk in colour. And so, they went and threw themselves into it, and they returned with their bodies not afflicted any more, but they attained the most beautiful of looks. [Then,] they said to me: This is the garden of Eden, and that is your dwelling, so I looked upwards, and behold, [I saw] a palace like a white cloud; He said: ‘The said to me’, and they said to me: That is your dwelling;..... As for the people with one half of their face beautiful and the other half ugly, it is because they had mixed good deeds and bad deeds, but Allah had forgiven them” [Bukhari 7047]

Narrated Abu Moosa Al-Ash‘aree (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: “In Paradise there is a pavilion which is made of a hollowed out pearl which is sixty miles wide (the height of which is thirty miles, as per other narrations), in each corner of it the believer will have wives whom no one else can see” [Bukhari 4879, 4879 Muslim 2838]

Ibn ‘Abbaas narrated that the messenger of Allah said, “The shuhadaa [martyrs] are in a green dome beside the river of Baariq, near the gate of Paradise, from which provision comes to them morning and evening.” [Saheeh al-Jaami’ as-Sagheer, 3/235, no. 3636]

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: ...And we said: O messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), tell us about the material from which Paradise is made, and he replied by saying: “Bricks of gold and silver, and mortar of fragrant musk, pebbles of pearl and sapphire, and soil of saffron. Whoever enters it is filled with joy and will never feel miserable; he will live there forever and never die; their clothes will never wear out and their youth will never fade.” [At-Tirmidhi 2526]

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Taalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: “In Paradise there are dwellings whose inside can be seen from the outside, and the outside can be seen from inside.”, Then a Bedouin asked: to whom [they had been prepared] O messenger of Allah? He replied: “For those who speak softly and gently, and feed the hungry, and those who fast continuously and pray at night whilst the people are asleep.” [At-Tirmidhi 2527]

Ahmad reports with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn ‘Abbaas that the Prophet (saw) said, “Whoever builds a masjid for Allah, even if it is as small as the nest of a sandgrouse, Allah will build a house for him in Paradise“. [Saheeh al-Jaami’ as-Sagheer, 5/265,
no. 6005]

Narrated Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudree that the Prophet (saw) said, “The people of Paradise will look at the people dwelling in the chambers above them in the same way that people look at a brilliant star shining far away on the horizon, in the East or West, because of their superiority [in reward] over them.“ The people asked, “O Messenger of Allah, are these the dwellings of the Prophets which no one else can attain?” He replied, “No by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, they are for the men who believed in Allah, and also in His Messengers.” [Bukhaari 3256, Muslim 2831]
